We are thrilled to announce that our esteemed collaborator – Matthias Mann – has, together with his colleague Ruedi Aebersold,  been honored with the highly prestigious Dr. H.P. Heineken Prize for Biochemistry and Biophysics 2024. This recognition celebrates their pioneering efforts in proteome research.

Just this year it will be 60 years since Alfred Heineken established the first Heineken Prize: the Dr. H.P. Heineken Prize for Biochemistry and Biophysics. It was established as a tribute to the chemist Henry Pierre Heineken. And it is for this special anniversary, the jury has decided to honor not just one, but two scientists to receive the prize.

Matthias Mann, is the Director and Head of the Department “Proteomics and Signal Transduction” at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried. Together with Ruedi Aebersold, Professor Emeritus at ETH Zurich, they will be awarded the Dr. H.P. Heineken Prize for Biochemistry and Biophysics 2024. The jury recognizes their pioneering work in the field of proteomics. Specifically, the groundbreaking technologies for studying proteins in a holistic approach, topics of direct relevance to the research at the BIRD team.

Our dear collaborator, Matthias Mann, pursued his studies in physics and mathematics at the Georg-August University in Göttingen. He earned his doctorate in chemical engineering from Yale University in New Haven, USA. Following a postdoctoral research at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense, he took on the role of group leader at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg. Since 2005, Matthias Mann is Director at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried/Planegg near Munich. Additionally, since 2007, he has been leading the Proteomics Program at the University of Copenhagen.

He has received numerous awards for his research, including the Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine, the Körber Prize for European Science and the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize. With over 300,000 citations, Matthias Mann is the most cited scientist in Germany. In the past, half of the recipients of the H.P. Heineken Prizehave received the Nobel Prize.

The scientists at the BIRD team are very proud to have been collaborating with Matthias Mann and his team, and eagerly anticipate the upcoming planned joint efforts to come.

Join us in congratulating them on this remarkable prize!
