Martin Grassl has successfully defended his thesis titled “Investigating Gas-Phase Photochemistry with Ultrafast X-ray Spectroscopy”.

In his PhD research in the group of Prof. Matthias Kling, Martin investigated how light-driven reactions in isolated molecules unfold on femtosecond timescales. He tracked electronic relaxation, structural changes, and the formation of competing photoproducts with element specificity using time-resolved X-ray absorption and photoelectron spectroscopy at several X-ray free-electron laser facilities. The work demonstrates how these advanced light sources can reveal complex molecular reaction pathways in real time.

Congratulations!
