Yesterday, the IMPRS-APS students had the unique opportunity to visit TRUMPF Scientific Lasers, led by former attoworld colleague Tom Metzger. Metzger, who developed ultrafast thin-disk amplifiers during his time in Ferenc Krausz’s research group, now serves as the managing director of TRUMPF Scientific Lasers. The company, which emerged from a collaboration between Metzger’s work and TRUMPF Laser, specializes in ultrafast lasers that combine high average power and high pulse energy.

During the visit, students gained comprehensive insights into both TRUMPF Scientific Lasers and the larger TRUMPF organization. They toured the clean room laboratories and observed the current laser system builds in progress. The students also got the chance to engage in meaningful discussions with employees, including several who previously worked at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics (MPQ).

In particular, the doctoral candidates were interested in comparing industry work to academic research. They learned that while lab work at TRUMPF Scientific Lasers shares similarities with PhD research, there are key differences. For instance, there is an increased focus on reliability for lasers intended for clients, which necessitates enhanced communication and a more structured working style.

The visit was part of a series organized by IMPRS-APS coordinator Lena Beggel, aimed at exposing doctoral candidates to potential careers beyond academia. The experience provided valuable insights into the transition from research to industry in the field of advanced photon science. More events are currently being planned to provide students with further opportunities to explore diverse career pathways.
