crystals for ultrashort pulses of infrared light (1)

Ultrashort pulses of infrared and terahertz light can be generated and detected more efficiently by optically bonding crystals such as ZnTe and GaSe into a single element. But these crystals are notoriously difficult to process, and conventional optical adhesives are often unsuitable for such radiation. The FRIS-team has identified a promising adhesive for the job. Here, Dr. Stanislav Balabanov examines a crystal sample under a microscope. In this way researchers fine-tune the application and crystallization process to achieve a uniform bonding layer free of voids and cracks.
